Urgent Financial Appeal for Ukrainian Refugees

Dear beloved children in the Lord, It is with profound pain and sorrow that we see the situation unfolding in Ukraine. The invasion of Russian troops has already caused death and destruction in many areas of the country and, as the battle progresses, the human cost continues to rise. It is heartbreaking to see the images of destroyed buildings, homes, and traffic jams as refugees flee the cities for their safety. As Orthodox Christians we are expected to help those…

Metropolitan Tikhon issues statement

Dearly beloved children in the Lord,  In light of the distressing developments in Ukraine affecting millions of innocent people in the region, I wholeheartedly urge you to pray for peace and the well-being of our brothers and sisters who are enduring this tragic moment.  I ask that the hostilities be ceased immediately and that President Putin put an end to the military operations. As Orthodox Christians, we condemn violence and aggression.  I offer my support and prayers to my brother…

Nativity Message of Archbishop Benjamin

May the brightness of the Child come into the world this day to dispel its darkness enlighten all of you, my beloved flock. May the hope given to us this day never fade away no matter the difficulties facing us. May the Gift that is placed in our hands this day always be received as the only gift that matters.

Area Christmas Fundraisers

The Bay Area is a wonderful place for richly diverse Orthodox Christian communities. Several parishes have sent us information on fundraisers to support your celebrations around the Nativity of Christ. See below for links to fliers from San Francisco, Menlo Park, and Saratoga:

Bay Area high school teen gathering at Holy Trinity

On Sunday, October 3, fifteen high school teens from Holy Trinity Cathedral, St. Seraphim Cathedral, St. Nicholas Church, Nativity of the Virgin Church, and St. Susanna Mission gathered in San Francisco at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Pier 39 for a full afternoon and evening of fellowship. They had a great time being with one another (as did their chaperones)! A true opportunity to encourage one another and build one another up (1 Thessalonians 5:11)!

Fort Ross Pilgrimage 2021

His Eminence, Archbishop Benjamin, and His Grace, Bishop Daniel, led the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of the West in the annual (since 1925) pilgrimage to Fort Ross on the 4th of July. Fort Ross is now a California state historic park and is the site of the first Orthodox house of prayer south of Alaska. (Photographs courtesy of Matushka Sophia Sokolov)

Abp. Benjamin & Bp. Gideon of Makarov on All Saints of America Sunday

On American Independence Day, July 4, we celebrated the Sunday of All Saints of America. The Divine Liturgy was served by His Eminence, Archbishop Benjamin and visiting Bishop Gideon of Makarov, Vicar of the Kyiv Metropolis (Ukrainian Orthodox Church), who was accompanied by Protodeacon Antony. We were grateful for their presence and for pilgrims from all over who enhanced our assembly this holy day!

Pentecost 2021 Photographs

“On the last day, that great day of the Feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink…” (John 7:37-52; 8:12). On Saturday evening and the morning of Sunday, June 20, our Cathedral parish celebrated our patronal feast day of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit. His Eminence, Archbishop Benjamin presided at the festal services. Our festivities began with a festal vigil and reception Saturday night celebrated with all of our…
