Assistant Professor of Liturgical Theology
St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary
Father Deacon Vitaly teaches Liturgical Theology at St. Vladimir’s Seminary and serves as the “Ecclesiarch” responsible for the divine services in the seminary chapel. Born in Latvia, Dn. Vitaly relocated to the United States in 1999 after completing his undergraduate studies. He is a graduate of St. Vladimir’s and earned his doctorate in 2012 from Notre Dame. He taught at Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary (Jordanville, NY) before joining the faculty of St. Vladimir’s in 2020. Dn. Vitaly’s research interests include the liturgical history of Jerusalem and Palestine in the Byzantine period which frequently has him combing through ancient Georgian manuscripts. He is translator of many of the service books used in our churches and is appreciated by our seminarians as one of the kindest and most thorough instructors during their priestly formation.
We are excited to have one of the foremost experts in our land on the services of the Church lead us through the hymns and prayers of the Great Fast and Holy Week and guide us through the deep liturgical theology they reveal to us.
